Wellness Program - Select Diets

Zone Diet: A systematic lifelong approach using food to prevent chronic disease.

Protein
Avoid protein sources rich in saturated fats and cholesterol like organ meats (liver pate) and fatty cuts of beef and pork. Low fat protein sources like fish, chicken, and turkey are best.

Carbohydrates
Starches and grains are considered high-density carbohydrates, fruits are medium density and vegetables are low-density carbohydrates. The zone diet relies heavily on low-density carbohydrates, which only stabilizes insulin but also ensures that you are never deprived of an adequate volume of food.

Fats
The fats you should minimize or avoid are the saturated fats, trans-fats and omega-6 fats. You find saturated fats in milk, cheddar cheese, butter and ice cream. Trans-fats are found in margarine and in many processed snack foods. Polyunsaturated fats like soy, safflower, sunflower and corn oils are rich in omega-6 and should be avoided. The best fats to add to the zone meals are olive oil, (extra virgin), some nuts and avocados
(monounsaturated fats).
