The term nutraceuticals includes a broad array of nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbals and botanicals. Until the early 20th century physicians and healers were trained in botany and relied heavily on botanical medicines. This began to change in the early 1900's when pharmaceutical companies began to synthesize drugs from chemical compounds. Over the next few decades, drug formulas were standardized, tested and patented. Pharmaceuticals are covered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and must comply with many stringent requirements. In the U.S., nutraceuticals are marketed as food supplements, rather than drugs, and are thus not subject to the same controls.
